Jeff Greinke | Artist and Musician

Jeff Greinke has long been known as one of the early innovators of the music genre known as “Dark Ambient.” His body of sound work, since he first began composing and recording 45 years ago, has traversed a multitude of sonic landscapes, from industrial noise to elegant, neoclassical compositions, nearly all informed by his studies in meteorology and his deep appreciation of the mysterious rhythms of the natural world.

Jeff’s experimental photography shares a kindred origin and aesthetic with his music. Like his  music, his images evoke spaces and places both restful and curiously exciting. The painterly quality of his photographic work, filled with strokes of lush color and texture, welcomes the viewer to dream-like places of reverie and wonder.

EXPLORE Jeff’s Photography

“My focus and intent as a photographer is to capture, explore and bring out the inherent beauty I see in in everyday life.  I do this chiefly through a meticulous process of layering multiple exposures, many of which involve a technique known as ICM (Intentional Camera Movement).  In other words, I am moving my camera in a multitude of ways while taking each shot with my camera set at very slow shutter speeds.  This tends to blur and stretch the image.  Later, in my studio, I combine these individual captures layer by layer, finessing the opacity of each along the way.  Eventually a composite image will unfold and a completely new landscape will emerge with painterly, texturally rich, often times impressionistic qualities that appeal to me greatly.  It is my aim to make the ordinary extraordinary, and it is my hope that in sharing these works with others, one’s own visual world experienced in everyday life will become more fascinating, enriched, and rewarding.”

“Sound and image are intricately linked for me.  My recorded music is much like my visual work – multilayered, textural, impressionistic, and often dreamy.  I move between the two mediums very comfortably, often pairing the two when I present my work publicly.”
